When it comes to the widespread practice of pipe bending, it is important to understand that a considerable part of the activity attributed to a particular part of the working process is pipe rolling.
The process involves bending tubes or pipes into a spring-like shape, converting straight tubes and pipes into helical spirals, similar to children’s toys jumping down stairs. We’ve found this delicate process to be useful across a wide range of industries.
The coiling can be done manually or under computer control, both producing very similar results. The key to this process is a machine specially designed for this purpose.
Depending on the expected results after fabrication, there are several machines dedicated to bending pipes and profiles, which we will discuss further in this article. The diameter, length, pitch and thickness of the final product coil and tube can vary.
Almost all types of hose reels operate with hydraulic systems and employ computer control techniques to maintain consistency and minimize the risk of human error. However, some types do require a human to function.
These machines are so complex that they require trained professionals and dedicated personnel to operate them efficiently and safely.
Most pipe bending is done by companies and service companies that specialize in metal engineering and pipe bending services. However, if you are working on a demanding project that will benefit from such production capabilities, investing in such machines is not a flawed business logic. They also maintain reasonable prices on the used machinery market. The four most common types of coilers include:
A rotating drum is a simple machine mainly used for coiling smaller sized pipes.A rotary drum machine positions the pipe on a drum, which is then guided at a 90-degree angle by a single roller that bends the pipe into a helical shape.
This machine is a bit more complicated than a rotating drum, consisting of three rollers, as the name suggests. The first two are used to guide the pipe or tube under the third roller, which bends the pipe or tube, and at the same time, requires two operators to apply lateral force to effectively form the spiral.
Although the operation of this machine is similar to that of a three-roll bender, it requires no manual operation, which is crucial for a three-roll bender. To make up for the lack of manual labor, it uses more rollers to shape the spiral.
Different designs use different numbers of rollers. In this way, different variations of the shape of the helix can be achieved. The machine pushes the tube into three rollers to bend it, and a single roller bends it laterally, creating a coiled spiral.
Somewhat similar to a rotating drum, the two-disc coil bender is designed to bend longer pipes and tubes. It uses a spindle around which the tube is wound, while separate rollers guide it into a spiral.
Any malleable tube, including steel, galvanized steel, stainless steel, copper and aluminum, may be coiled.Depending on the application, the diameter of the pipe can vary from less than 25 mm to several centimeters.
Almost any length of tubing can be coiled. Both thin-walled and thick-walled tubing can be coiled.Coils are available in flat or pancake form, single helix, double helix, nested coils, coiled tubing and many other variants, depending on the equipment available and the specifications of the individual application.
As we pointed out in the introduction, there are many coils and coil applications in many different sectors and industries. The four most notable include the air conditioning and refrigeration industry, the distillation industry, and the oil and gas industry.
The air conditioning and refrigeration industry is highly reliant on coils as it is used extensively as a heat exchanger.
Spiral tubes provide a larger surface area than serpentine bends or standard straight tubes to effectively facilitate the heat exchange process between the refrigerant inside the tube and the air or ground around the tube.
For air conditioning applications, the evaporator system includes coils within the air conditioning system. If you’re using a geothermal system, you can also use coiled tubing to create a ground loop since it doesn’t take up as much space as other pipes.
If distilling vodka or whisky, the distillery will need a coil system.Essentially, the unclean fermentation mixture is heated during distillation before the alcohol begins to evaporate or boil.
The alcohol vapor is separated from the water vapor and condensed into pure alcohol through a coil in the cold water tank, where the vapor cools and condenses. The helical tube is called a worm in this application and it is also made of copper.
Coiled pipes are especially used in the oil and gas industry. The most common use is recycling or denitrification.Due to its weight (the well is said to have been crushed), the hydrostatic head (a column of fluid in the wellbore) may inhibit the resulting fluid flow.
The safest (but unfortunately not the cheapest) option is to use a gas, primarily nitrogen (often called “nitrogen shock”) to circulate the fluid. It is also used in pumping, coiled tubing drilling, logging, perforating and production.
Coiled tubes are an important service in many industries and multiple sectors, so the demand for tube bending machines is high and is expected to increase globally. With the expansion, development and transformation of enterprises, the demand for coil services will increase, and the expansion of the market cannot be underestimated or ignored.
