SAN FRANCISCO (crown). The city of San Francisco is testing several new models of trash cans that will replace the city’s current city trash cans that are 20 years old, according to the San Francisco Department of Public Works. The City is seeking public input to decide on six different models.
In 2020, the Department of Public Works worked with Bay Area industrial designers at the Creative Integration Institute (ICI) to narrow down the design of the city’s new trash can down to three final concepts. These concepts were then turned into 15 street test prototypes. Three ready-made business models were also considered.
Prototypes of six different new generation public waste bins were placed on the streets of the city for practical testing. There will be five jars for each custom design, and three to four for each finished model scattered throughout the city.

The silhouette is meant to represent two separate garbage yards with cans and bottles for ransom at the top and trash at the bottom. Steel ribs are welded on its ribs, providing a strong frame and preventing graffiti. It also has a shroud to minimize the size of items that can be thrown into it.
According to the Public Works website, the Slim Silhouette has a slim profile that “leaves more space on the sidewalk for people to move freely while clearly showing drop-out and recycling options at the front.” bilateral and trough-shaped, designed to make digging difficult. It is made of stainless steel pipe, which is easier to clean and reduces free space for graffiti.
According to the public works website, the padded plaza “retains the recognizable shape of a trash can but brings the aesthetic into the 21st century.” It consists of four curved panels with adjustable base and dome. There is a deliberate gap between the panels to allow for the integration of components including footrests and hinges. The padded square has holes for trash and bottles/cans behind the front bin door for a neat look.
BearSaver supports custom vinyl graphic designs and has four vertical surfaces. It is also possible to add a recycling container. It’s one of four business models the city is testing, created by Securr.
