This article provides an alternative specification for food industry services in Australia.Such specifications include:
ASTM A269 “Specification for General Seamless and Welded Austenitic Stainless Steel Pipe”
ASTM A249 “Specification for Welded Austenitic Steel Boiler, Superheater, Heat Exchanger, and Condenser Tubes”
AS1528 was revised in 2001 by key stakeholders in the Australian food manufacturing and tubing industry.AS 1528 is unique because it covers all relevant fittings except tubes.
All sizes are common grades such as grades 304, 304L, 316 and 316L.AS1528.1 covers all grades of duplex and austenitic stainless steels listed in ASTM A240.
All specifications require fusion welded products without filler metal.Specifications such as ASTM A270, ASTM A269 and AS 1528 also cover seamless products.
AS 1528 specifies a nominal thickness of 1.6 mm for all outside diameters (ODs) and 2 mm for 203.2 mm; other thicknesses may be specified by the purchaser.Standard tolerance is +nil, -0.10mm.Fully negative tolerances are common practice for all sizes of pipe, and are produced at the lower end of the tolerance range.A typical range is between 1.52 and 1.58 mm.This tolerance also applies to pipe fittings.
* ASTM A554 Tolerance for weld removal conditions.*AS1528 also covers OD sizes 12.7, 19.0, 31.8, 127.0, 152.4 and 203.2mm
All of these pipe specifications provide wall thickness and outside diameter limits.The inner diameter is not mentioned separately.
The various surface finish properties recommended by Food Industry Services Australia are as follows:
Treatment products used in the food industry require pipes with no weld residue on the inner surface.
The mechanical properties of various stainless steel grades commonly used in the food industry are as follows:
