Willie Nelson on weapons debate: "A lot of guns … civilians don't have to have those … those are for military use"

Tonight at 9pm, Piers Morgan will sit down with legendary musician and songwriter Willie Nelson for an exclusive prime-time interview covering everything from marijuana to politics.
Two weeks after the 2012 election, Nielsen admitted that he did not go to the polls, but was pleased with the choice the US made:
“I’m glad he’s (Barack Obama) re-elected. I think he has a lot of things that benefit what he’s going through. Women believe in what he’s talking about. Blacks and Hispanics and Hispanics and Hispanics and women. If you With those three things, you’re going to win.” I really think Obama is going to win, he really doesn’t need another vote, he’s already stitched it up.”
Five months after his 80th birthday, the man with more than 60 studio albums said he grew up around guns and had no problem hunting. In his view, however, high-powered assault rifles are a whole different discussion:
“I don’t know what I’m going to do with a gun that can shoot 100 times,” Nelson told the “Piers Morgan Tonight” host.”I don’t agree with that. I think it should be more regulated. I think a lot of guns – there’s no need for civilians to have those. Those are for the military.”

I’ve read posts that seem to equate gun control, waiting periods, background checks, and the removal of “military” weapons and magazines with 30 to 100 rounds of ammo under the Second Amendment.Yes, many people have the right to own a firearm (not an assault rifle), but that right has an asterisk to state that only “qualified” (read sane, non-felony, and well-trained) people can exercise that right. If military-grade weapons are banned, why would blind gun proponents automatically feel their right to bear arms is threatened.Individuals have the right to carry “weapons” other than machine guns, bazookas, mortars, etc.The discussion here should be mature enough that they recognize the problem with the proliferation of guns in the wrong hands.Steps to ensure that only qualified individuals have access to firearms represent no more “Second Amendment redaction” than laws governing the right to own and drive a car.No qualified individual has been denied a driver’s license or car ownership because of the process required to own and drive.Let the Second Amendment take a break — an overwhelming majority of NRA members favor tighter controls on gun ownership.None of these people see “ghost oppressors” disenfranchising them like you do.
Tom J: Not all drug addicts are as shameful as Willie. You don’t vote and don’t complain (this is from local elections all the way to the president).
shameful?please explain. You obviously have no problem with him smoking. He said people should be allowed to own guns.Unless you start talking about automatic rifles. There is no need for citizens to have them.shameful?
Not a single shot was fire in NYC, Oak City, how many people smoked when the bombs went off, or those planes crashed on those buildings! The problem with the owner is not the gun, any use of military weapons to take life or participation in the use of those weapons to take life should be a death sentence, if a person is found insane, it should be committed until compton is found mentally and then once that happens situation, you should spend the rest of your life in prison and throw away the keys!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please tell us the last time you were oppressed and needed a gun to fix it.Sounds like an interesting story.
If you live longer than a femtosecond, on a cosmic scale, you experience oppression. However, some corruption is less magical and more like a tragic failure than others.Indeed, who needs to look for feed?Let’s all get on our knees and plant some seeds.Enemies can breed as we go; as we get fat and smoke weed slowly. Here, there is no real enmity between me, the tree, and our master; the exhausted steed. There is no need to be complacent now.Where it believes, its freedom is also bleeding. So smoke if you see it, especially if you don’t — even if it’s a puff.If a groundhog is supposed to throw wood, then you can tell how much wood a groundhog will throw.
Wow…I also wanted to address some great responses.Thor, in principle, I agree with you.The same goes for the law (for now).So did our Founding Fathers, who knew that, especially after fighting the most powerful nation and military on Earth at the time, citizens needed to always be able to protect themselves in case it happened again.
A gun or any other weapon is necessary for self-protection if attacked.I personally don’t think there should be any laws in the future about guns or any other weapons that may or may not be there.
Now, I also feel compelled to comment on others who have done so so generously.1) helio.- Apparently, you’ve never been audited by the IRS!, 2) Buzz – didn’t you see the fare?So depressing!and 3) Terrance.- What a masterpiece! The only thing I can say is I want S*0 pressure) You’re smoking!I absolutely want some!Nor did it make up for it.I want to plant it too.
Can I assume you would agree that people living behind the Iron Curtain are oppressed? They tried armed rebellion in the 40′s and 50′s – they had nowhere to go but to die.The Berlin Wall came down not by guns, but by the power of the people – peaceful protest against the country.Read Gandhi.
The wall didn’t fall because of the gun?of course not!No Soviet citizen has a gun!”Strong” gun control policies prevent this. Not that it stopped Russian organized crime from owning guns.Oddly, offenders don’t care about the law.
Also, the wall didn’t come down because of “peaceful protests.”The wall came down because the Soviets failed. They didn’t have enough money or influence to control their empire, which allowed the people, despite being disarmed, to eventually revolt successfully.
Furthermore, I believe Gandhi once said, “Among the many evils of British rule in India, history will regard the deprivation of guns from an entire country as the darkest.”
@algol The fact that *some* armed rebellion failed doesn’t in itself make the concept of armed rebellion a wrong choice. There have also been many successful armed rebellions.Don’t pick anecdotes to support preselection bias, because there are just as many anecdotes to support the other side’s claims.
@Buzz: Your anecdote about personal abuse of arms rights doesn’t actually disprove the claim that gun ownership would be a good or effective tool against potential government oppression (that’s the whole reason why the 2nd Amendment was included in the bill โ€” โ€” because the people had just ended an armed rebellion against government oppression).
“Guns are there to protect people from oppressors”.Hey man, this particular position isn’t how the Second Amendment is written – it talks about well-armed militias – look up militias in the dictionary and you’ll find no mention of self-styled groups of individuals as the last bastion of liberty. If the government wants to use force against you, your little Winnie will be slapped off like a mosquito.become real.I’m sure you have a back room with enough food and water for 6 months so you can “resist” tyranny”. The government has always been good at attacking people without resorting to force, so why should they bother? . Please send me your address so I can live with you for a few months and feel protected when the government invades my country.
The “argument” that guns are ineffective against government/military tyranny is incorrect.See what’s going on in Libya – AK47s and pickups against jets, bombs, tanks and various government military forces…and see who’s losing. The goal of disarming the population is the same as ever – there is no real means of resisting the government.
Well, the only reason Tom’s rebels won in Libya is that they were assisted by the US/European coalition that used their modern planes and troops to enforce a no-fly zone on the very limited air force that Gaddafi had.The rebels also obtained a large number of rocket launchers and military weapons from outside. Now, who is going to help gunmen from the outside who think they might one day have to rise up against the US government?
Yes, DOPE will do great things for you.Allows you to release 60 studio albums (which is crazy), write beautiful music (which no ol’Joe can do), and just be a decent human being.
By the way, Tom J.!I don’t care why this old bastard doesn’t vote. Why does he think anyone cares what he does?I didn’t read the article or watch the video, and I don’t plan to.I stay away from this POS as much as possible.
Maybe you should give it a try, Tom, and we’ll see if anything clever comes out of his mouth.Obviously not smoking will not help you.
I really don’t care what Willie Nelson thinks about gun control! What makes his opinion more important than mine?
Shame on you Willie!Millions of people around the world sacrifice their lives every day to have choices we Americans take for granted.
You mean choose to speak your mind? You are ashamed of Willie for exercising his God-given rights.
If the government can do away with the 2nd Amendment.. then the 1st Amendment doesn’t matter either.. so important for his or anyone’s opinion
Yes – the last icon the NRA likes is also very fond of automatic weapons.Using one, he killed his ex-wife, her daughter, her daughter’s boyfriend and their 16-month-old baby.
Former Marine JT Ready is running for Pinar County sheriff and is a member of the U.S. Border Guard and Minuteman Program, which it describes as an anti-illegal immigration group, according to the Arizona Republic. He also belongs to the National Socialist Movement, an organization with white supremacist views, the paper said.
So he can’t kill those people with non-automatic weapons?Yes…he could have killed them with a knife.Should we ban knives too?Bad guys kill, not guns. They can do this with anything.
Knives are not as efficient as guns, and semi-automatic weapons are even more effective at killing people than revolvers.Banning semi-automatic weapons is a step sane voters can take in an attempt to slow the notoriety of deranged mass killers.
Bad argument Shane.Cowards who commit mass murder prefer automatic weapons. They must approach and face the victim with a knife.Look back at the history of the cowardly reclusive rejecters who committed these heinous acts.Auto-attack weapons make them easy.
How far can James Holmes go in a Colorado movie theater with a non-automatic gun?How many people do you think will die?
There is no logical reason for civilians to own automatic weapons, and if banning them means fewer people will die in these crazy shootings, then banning them is the logical thing to do.
Yes, I know guns don’t kill people, people kill people, but our right to own automatic guns isn’t as important as our lives.
@pritka: Semi-Auto: A gun that fires one bullet per trigger pull and utilizes some form of automatic charging (recoil-operated, gas-operated, or dual action).Double-action revolvers (most modern revolvers) are semi-automatic.In addition, modern revolvers tend to be loaded with large-caliber bullets, which prove to be effective against unarmored targets at short ranges.”Assault Rifles” are used for rifle rounds and, if military ammunition is used, are designed to strike armored targets at long range. This actually reduces their lethality due to the non-deformable nature of bullets.
Sherlock Holmes has no automatic weapons. He has a civilian AR-15, a .223 caliber semi-automatic rifle, and a 100-round Century magazine. The 100-round magazine actually reduces his efficiency compared to the standard 20 or 30-round magazine because the notoriously wrong magazine model gets stuck after 17 rounds.
I would also like to assume that if he actually had a selective fire rifle, that shot would be less lethal.First, the automatic fire of this rifle increases the chance of jamming, especially if the magazine is faulty.Second, if he gets stuck on the same round as before (17), his sustained auto fire will be less than a second; too little time to sweep anyone with it.
Holmes is actually pretty stupid about his gun choice if he’s going to cause the most loss of life.Everyone is always afraid of black rifles, but the .223 isn’t a relatively high-kill bullet. It usually takes multiple shots to kill a human-sized target. However, Holmes also has a 12-gauge pump-action shotgun loaded with 00 buckshot, as well as a 2 Colt M1911 semi-automatic pistol loaded with 0.45 ACP.Both of these conditions can cause a lot of cavitation and blood loss with just one good shot, whereas a 12-gauge 00-gauge shot will actually fire 8 or 9 rounds, each about the equivalent of a .33 pistol round.
In fact, the whole idea is a mess.He walked to the theater, puffed out smoke, fired a few bullets into the air, and then launched the attack. He’s an open target in 3 to 5 seconds; plenty of time to draw the weapon, reload if necessary, get the scope, and pull the trigger. It appears that the only “smart” part of his plan is to attack an area where law-abiding citizens have been told to disarm.Well.
You idiots, James Holmes has never used and never used an automatic weapon. Before you try to argue against them, please understand a few things. If someone called them 100 shots of “clips” again, I’d probably pass out laughing so hard it would make them sound so stupid and uneducated.I have no problem discussing the issue, but I will at least research the opposing arguments beforehand.
You can’t buy automatic weapons in the US, only semi-automatic ones. The AR-15, most commonly referred to as a “high-power” assault rifle, is actually relatively “low-power”, and it’s a .223 caliber. Most deer rifles are much more powerful, e.g. .270, .308 calibers are very common. If you’re going to complain about guns, try to understand these issues. Most people who oppose guns, who have no exposure to guns at all, live in the city watching Piers Morgan. You have your opinion, but make it an informed person.
I believe you need to study gun law.You can buy automatic weapons. My uncle is a citizen of the Navy and he owns several. You basically have to sign your life to have them, but you can.
Mike is in Utah and for just $300 you can buy a license to own and buy fully automatic weapons!
In addition to being hard to do, converting a semi-automatic to a fully automatic is a felony. As for hunting rifles and military rifles, almost all rifle designs are derived from military weapons.Bolt action, semi-automatic, they can fire 100 times no matter what military history it has.You just pull the trigger for every shot.
I’ve been a fan of Willie’s music for years, but I don’t think his use of marijuana and his politics are good choices or examples.
